Genetic Testing... any opinions?

1 Post

Hello,

I hope you don't mind me posting about this, as I don't have cancer, I just wanted some advice.

My mother is on her 4th bout of cancer (she's had breast, and uterine). My grandmother had stomach cancer, but as far as I know that's it in my immediate family.

I have had 3 borderline smear results over the last 3 years, and one minor change (I didn't need treatment), am awaiting another smear in 6 mths to see if things no longer borderline. I am turning into a hypochondriac and considering getting genetic testing for cancer.

I'm not even sure if I'm in one of the risk categories, but wanted to know if anyone else had it done and what they felt?

I look after my health as in exercise, eat well, but am aware that I really like red wine (I don't drink loads but some weeks it's above 14 units), and think if I actually got back results saying I had a gene it may help me cut down.

If anyone can give me their thoughts I'd appreciate it, and best wishes to everyone on here fighting breast cancer.

El

Just saw yur post hunny and thought id give you a quick reply and send you some warm hugs.

I would say that if i was in your position then i would seriously consider getting tested...  the fact that you mother is currently still fighting cancer is a strong indicator that your at a higher risk yourself.

perhaps getting tested will help alieviate some of the worries or help you face the possibility of you maybe developing it in the future.. it could if anything just make you more aware and prompt you to test/ check yourself much more if you dont already.

that being said i hope your next smear test comes back clear.
