Bad Attitudes of co-workers. any tips for coping?

Dear all,

I have an OK job that i could turn into a wonderful one but i find one or two of my co-workers negative and sometimes bullying attitudes are making me think of leaving and trying my luck some place else.

One particular co-worker talks to everyone like they are rubbish and incompetent because they don't do everything the way he thinks it should be done. He is "equal opportunities" in that everyone gets talked down too.... his team leader, other managers and collogues.... the only person he is polite to is the head of department....

What i don't understand is why anyone puts up with him.... I avoid him like the plague but we work in the same open plan office and on one or two occasions i have found something to do in another office so i can get away from the sound of the current self important lecture he is delivering at that given moment.

Having discussed his attitude with others they agree.... but no-one seems to do anything about him despite it being clear he is a black hole of bad attitude that drags down everyone around him

Ok so the above was a bit of a rant...... So im wondering if anyone has any coping mechanisms they would like to share.... or should i just "bin" the two years work i have put into getting the most out of this job and just look for something else....? option number two seems a bit of a copout and the world is full of A-holes.....

so... Yeah... any good suggestions on how to not let this person get to me would be gratefully received.

thanks for reading This!

Hi Smallgirl,

I once bought a book on the subject and it taught me a bit more about types of people that you come across, mostly at work but could be anywhere. It was called 'Dealing with people you can't stand'.

I've just checked and it's still available from Amazon...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dealing-People-You-Cant-Stand/dp/0071379444/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1...

It might be worth checking the reviews too.

The book highlights the following...

  • How to identify 10 bothersome behaviours, and deal successfully with each of them!
  • How difficult people think, what they fear, and why they act the way they do.
  • How to use advanced, sophisticated "listening techniques" to unlock the doors to people's minds, hearts, and deepest needs.
  • How to cultivate nine "take-charge" skills that turn conflict into cooperation by reducing the differences between people.
  • How to change the destructive behavior of the tank...the know-it-all...the grenade...the whiner...and many more!

It might just be worth investing in the book or seeing if they have a copy at the library.

Owly x

It's just another form obullying and shouldn't be tolerated although that os easier said than done of course. Is there a suoervisor that you and some other others who feel the same could go and talk to? If you go as group and put it politely that you all feel your colleague should be spoken to about his attitude then the focus is taken off you specifically. It is a difficult situation but I don' see why you should be bullied out of your job. Good luck.
