Driving stories good and bad

Hi all,

I was just thinking how it would be good to hear any stories of experiences, anyone might have had while on a driving lesson good or bad or funny.

I recently posted on the board about a particularly stressful experience i had, whilst out practising with my bf, I was greatly relieved to hear a fellow board member had experienced a similar stressful situation.

My story

my bf has took me out a few times although not sure if he will again for a while after last time, he took me for a drive to a place called Hexham but I drove the scenic route it was a lot of single lane winding roads I was doing really well until we came to a particularly narrow bend on a decline which had a canopy of trees so was pretty dark as I reached the bend about 4 cars were coming round the bend in the opposite direction and to me they didn't seem to be slowing down for me aaarhhhhhh! My natural instinct was to steer further to the left to give them more room and stop. Well I did do that but as it was dark I hadn't noticed that I was actually steering up onto the verge my bf panicked thinking I wasn't going to stop and yanked the handbrake on so hard the cable snapped!! I had to put it in gear to stop it rolling down the hill and he took over.

Needless to say he hasn't took me out since!

This is a good idea Paula and I am sure members will add to the thread :smileysurprised:)

I have one from last night actually!

I was at some lights waiting to go across a bridge near where I live, I was looking at the Audi TT in front and wondering if it was my neighbour, and then wondering which way he would go home if it was him, and if I went diff way (if he didnt turn off where I know a short cut then I would lol) I would get parked first..

so all these thoughts are going through my mind when I notice he is moving very strangley over to the right "what on earth is he doing??" I think, then instinct made me look in my rear view mirror (lights still red they take forever to change) and there coming up behind is a Fire engine...

OHh blimey!  No sirens but lots lights!  Made me jump thank goodness I looked in mirror, so I moved over too and when he did do the siren because of a car in front and to my left hadnt moved, I didnt poop my pants lol

That will teach me not to daydream at the lights and to be fully aware still and to check mirrors even tho I am stationary!

Oh Jane, that sound's scary!!!

I suppose when I have passed my test and am driving around regularly I will lose the focused mode I am in on every driving lesson maybe a bit too focused as I ACHE after a 2 hour lesson from being so tense lol!

I have my theory booked for next Friday so have been using the focus driving test cd ROM and have all of a sudden become more aware of hazards.

I have another one this one is good though.

My bf was taking me out this one time and we where I live it is semi rural and there are quite a few farms, so I am driving along and all of a sudden I see a tractor parked up on my side of the road so anyway I was going to over take but there was another tractor coming in the other direction so continued to wait, when he got passed I went and as I got passed the tractor there was a huge combine harvester,  I thought how am I ever going to get passed that!! There was a long cue of traffic behind me so I just went and I navigated through past this combine harvester the gap to me looked about 2 meters wide (I think gaps must look smaller to learners) but I nailed it and got through anyway and was really proud of myself!

I have to admit to having closed my eyes and just hoped for the best with some small gaps lol

It does get less scary in the sense that you do relax more.  I remember being exhausted after most lessons!  Even now if I do a long drive I am physically and mentally exhausted.

I will tell you something too about when I first passed my test..

If I had a couple of places to go ie a friends, then my mums, or a friends then to town, I would do one thing, come home, not even necessarily park up, then go again, it was like mentally I couldnt go anywhere unless I started off from home!!

Thankfully that soon passed tho, and now I nip from place to place to place...

It amazes me still at progression, and it iwll you, that is another reason I loved the journal!

Keep at it I think you are doing fab!  and it is good to have a sense of danger and hazaard it is what will make you a good driver!
