selling on ebay

Don't usually visit here but wondered if folks could guide me. I've got some household things I want to get rid of. Usually I hand them over to a charity shop but a friend suggested some of the ornaments might be worth selling on ebay.

Trouble is I've only ever bought on ebay and even that makes me nervous. So, is selling on ebay easy? I just don't know where to start.

Hi Tabby and welcome aboard

I'm sorry you haven't had any replies to your post yet as I feel sure there will be many people reading this who are regular ebayers.  Unfortunately I've not sold anything on ebay either and can't help you out but maybe we can tempt a passer by to give us some tips.

Luv Maid

Thanks Maid.

Not sure if the things I've got will sell or even if it is worth the effort but it would be useful to know a  bit more from people who do use ebay.

hugs
Tabbs

Hi Tabby,

This is not going to be very constructive I am afraid, by I too have thought about selling things on e-bay.  I have a friend who swears by it and seems to do a lot, but cannot give me sufficient information about the security of the system.

My understanding to date, is that you have to have an account with e-bay, which you set up from their web-site.  Once everything has been cleared, can then place items up for sale with a price and a contact e-mail.  From what I can gather, is that you need some sort of digital camera to put the item on the screen so people can see what it is you are selling.

The details supplied on the e-bay contract contain your reference code and details how to place an item for sale, with a reserve price.

The person purchasing then clicks on it and then agrees a price through a system like this.  Settlement takes place by a card issued by e-bay and it would appear that the goods are dispatched to a distribution centre once a payment is cleared;  or the person selling the equiment is varified.

That appears to be the the theory.

However, like yourself, I am not convinced about its security and therefore have never trusted it. My friend says it is perfectly safe, but there are two issues:

If a payment is received by the seller, what happens if it is not recevied by the Purchaser.

The other  issue is that i do not like sending money to a blind bank account where anyone can be receiving the money and it may not be passed on.   My paranoia may be misguided since the e-bay has been around for a long time, but like you I am not totally convinced.

Regards

Christine.

Does your friend sell on ebay? Maybe they'd do it for you if you asked. I've never been on the site myself but here's their guide to getting started. There is also a mass of information, tips etc on the Martin Lewis website.

Hi Sam,

I have visited the site and note that they state that you need to have a digital photograph of the item to be sold.

As usual form their "help menu" I can't find the answer I need.

Is it compulsory to have a digital photograph of the item for sale?

I do not own or have access to  a digital camera.

Also do you have a telephone number that I can talk to a human from the E-bay regime who can answer other questions I need answered.

Thanks

No idea, as I said in my previous post I've never used ebay, just thought the link might help Tabbs get started. Sorry I can't be of help.
