Hi

My baby is 2 weeks old, im mix feeding breast and formula. I have been making up bottles in advance and keeping them in the fridge. I have two children although teenagers and did the same with them, so gave no thought to doing it this way untl today when i saw in my birth to 5 book not to do this.

I have looked at advice on the internet and it is very conflicting, i was just wondering how others were doing it.

thanks in advance

Hi Karen

Unfortunately the advice is pretty conflicting when it comes to preparing formula in advance.

What I do is at the end of each day I boil the kettle and prepare the water for every bottle for the next day, then I add the milk as and when I need it.

The recommendations are due to bacteria forming in the milk when it is prepared in advance. I spoke to my HV about this and she said that she would happily prepare a bottle 3 hours before but no earlier due to the possibility of bacteria which could cause a tummy upset.

xx

I just always keep cooled boiled water in an extra bottle. When it's time to feed, I will mix the cooled boiled water with small amount of just boiled boiling water to make it lukewarm. So, all bottles are always freshly prepared.

If you just boil a bit of boiling water for mixing, it only take a minute so I find it not stressful at all. :smileyhappy:

The midwives told me when I was in hospital to prepare the feed and store in the fridge. Four years ago with DD they told me to prepare the water and add the powder when I needed it but apparently that's changed now!!
