Hi all,

For years now I've wanted to learn to play the piano. I keep saying to DP when the kids no longer use the conservatory for toys then I'm getting a piano!

Jools am I right in remembering you play the piano? Did you learn when you were at school? I'd love to learn but wonder if I'm the wrong age, I know you're never to old to learn something new but you know what I mean. I also wonder how hard it is to pick it up. I guess that's a bit of a silly question and some take to it more than others. Someone suggested looking on you-tube but I want to learn properly and not pick up bad habits.

Can anyone else play any musical instruments and how old were you when you learnt?

Hi Sunshine,

This is something I would love to know about too. I taught myself to play the piano when I was a child but it was an old piano and the programme 'It's a Knockout' was on tv where they regularly smashed pianos up and so my dad smashed ours up... I'm sure it wasn't to do with the quality of my playing .. :smileyhappy:

I seem to remember playing something from the Wizard of Oz but I was no child prodigy that's for sure. It was more like 'somewhere over the rainbow' with one or two fingers. :smileyhappy:

I would really like to have another go but my memory isn't so good and any tutor would have to be extremely patient with me. I am 56 so I hope I am not going to be too old to have a go.

Where are you planning on going to learn ?

Owly x

I've no idea! I'm guessing tutors come to the house most of the time which is no good for me as I don't have a piano! I suppose like most things it all boils down to cost.

Ooh :smileysad: I thought they would have a piano at their home or somewhere where I could go for lessons.

Maybe I could google for piano lessons on the wirral and see what's on offer. I don't expect I'll do it though.

I have these intentions from long held dreams but never actually do anything about them.

Yes I play the piano but badly and not at all these days...time...kids...blah blah blah

You are never too old to learn! Some tutors will teach you at their home, just call a few and explain you want to have a go before committing to buy. I think pianos are pretty easy to play. You don't have to learn how to make a sound in the first place like woodwind or brass, you don't need to learn different fingering or bowing, you just need to have a go and practice!

I'm not a great pianist as I self taught, but even after years of not playing I pick it back up with practice. Once DS is older my electric piano will be assembled. No point until he stops climbing everything and attempting to take things apart!

Hi Sunshine,

I had piano lessons when I was very early thirties, when DS started. I loved feeling the vibrations back through my fingers. I got to grade two then my teacher passed away and I never found someone else.

Hugs

This might sound like a stupid question and I know everyone is different but what time scale do you think someone would need to pick up the basics and be able to play at least a simple tune. I'm just worried about cost really.

In that case I'd do it the other way round! So teach yourself using a good book or a decent computer program and when you get to a point where you can't get any further then get a teacher to move you on. You can then do that for as long as you fancy or afford.

I'm self taught and when I take the piano up again I will refresh my skills then have lessons to develop me further. I'll then take a break, see how I go and then have more lessons with another teacher- nice to get a different one to move you on again.

Enjoy! X
