Very Fussy Eater
I am a very fussy eater, I have been for as long as i can remember.. I only eat certain foods.. an its a short list..!!
I find it annoying, as i cant eat out with my friends/boyfriends. I have tried to taste different foods but i physically cant do it.. i just cant open my mouth an put the food in, i dont understand why.
I have a 2 year old son who as of now eats anything and everything.. but when we eat meals together he always wants what i have but for my dinner i will only have 1 thing (e.g. 1 steak an kidney pie, as i dont like to eat anything else with a steak pie) I want to be able to eat whatever i want and try new things.
I watched a programme on BBC3, Fussy Eaters and wondered if there are people like that, that you actually go and see and they help you without having to go on a tv show????
If anyone can help at all i would be very grateful.

Hi there & welcome to the board,
It's good that you want to make the move to change your eating habits and eat a more varied diet, good on you, but i know it's probably easier said than done. There is help available and i would say the first place to go is to your gp who can maybe refer you to someone like a dietitian or counsellor who specialises in the area because i expect you need to find out & try and understand why you dont feel you can eat other foods and then have help to try and branch out and try other foods. I'm sure there are lots of people who specialise in eating disorders of all types including selective eating who may be able to help you. It may also be worth trying to contact the bbc and finding out if they have any information of people you could contact.
Maybe someone else might read this who has been in a similar situation & got help or know more about the help available, i'm afraid i dont know an awful lot but i am sure you dont need to struggle with this alone-there will definetely be help out there, it's just a case of finding it!
Good luck,
Frances

Hi,
I doubt I'm going to be any help but I just wanted you to know you're not alone!
I used to be a super fussy eater, only eating a really limited array of foods, only certain combinations of food, wouldn't have wet and dry foods on the same plate and stuff like that.
I am much better than I was (although I still won't have baked beans on the same plate as anything else). I got over it when I went away to work and staff food was included. I knew I couldn't have things prepared specially for me so I had to "get over it" kind of thing. Some things I liked, some things I didn't but I just had to remove the emotion from it and down it all! I think being away from home where people pandered to my issues somewhat really helped me to deal with things. I was free of the constraints of my comfort zone, excuses and really of my own brain which is the only thing that was holding me back.
If you feel you need help it might be worth looking for some kind of councellor, even if they are not food fear specialists they might be able to help you deal with whatever it is that started this problem. Or they might know how you can contact someone who specialises with this kind of thing.
Good luck, and fwiw, it really is worth busting out of the jail you're in. There is so much amazing food out there it's worth the pain to open yourself up to it.
