Not speaking

Hi All

My son is nearly 20months old and he is not saying anything at all. He understands what you say to him for example I told him him to put away all of his cutlery that he had taken out and he put them all away no problem. Or if you ask him to come here etc he will but he just does not say a word! he makes a lot of noise but none of it is even remotely word like.

Is this a problem? I thought he would at least be saying mam or dad by now.

Thanks Emma

Wouldn't hurt to speak to your health visitor or GP he should really be able to say a few words - where is he in the family - subsequent siblings can be slow to talk as the older one does it for them - tongue tie might also be something to look at Hope you get to the bottom of it soon

Hi thanks for replying. I spoke to the health visitor and she thinks it is nothing to worry about and didn't really give me much help to be honest. He is onlt my first so he has no siblings, but he does go to nursery with other children.

Maybe try your GP to rule out anything physical
my DS3 was slow to talk but by 21months he could count to 10 and speak in two word sentences etc so think it is definitely worth following up on

Just wondering how things are now and if your son is now saying a few words?

Hi

He has just had his first speech therapy session this week and he has started to say a few words. Mostly the dogs name but it's a start. He was sent for a hearing test and they discovered he had glue ear which they think is the reason he wasn't speaking. apparently that is starting to clear up and we starting to notice the odd words and he is babbling a lot when he's playing now.

So we are getting there.

Thanks for asking and for previous advice

Hi Emma,

I'm really pleased that things are slowly improving. It's good that they found the glue ear which is something they can do something about to help make a difference.

Good luck with everything.

Owly x
