How clean is your house?

I was in a charity shop yesterday nosing through the books when I saw one called How clean is your house which, I gather, is based on a TV programme. It had loads of suggestions for cleaning everything, including the loo.  I always say my home is clean enough to be health but not at the expense of being happy. What do you think of that programme?

I used to love watching that programme.  The state of some of the houses was revolting though, not just muddle but filth!

Some of the best bits of the programme was where they gave hints for cleaning using stuff like bicarb or vinegar.

I agree that happiness comes before absolute cleanliness but not to an extent where there were health risks. There certainly were risks with a lot of the houses shown in the programme.

Some of the old fashioned cleaning methods, like using bicarb and vinegar actually work better than some of the expense cleaning products. This book had loads of hints for cleaning.

Yes, happy but definitely not at the expense of health.

Hi Jill,

I never liked what I saw because I would cringe at the state of some of the places and also didn't want to be sitting down relaxing and find myself reminded of what might be lurking in corners that I hadn't managed to get round to.

I couldn't take to the presenters either as they seemed bossy and bullying. Possibly they did it in a well meant manner but I couldn't stick with it long enough to find out.

Some years later I saw them on a different programme out in the street where people could bring them various items and they would clean them or show them what to do. I found that fascinating.

I'm sure the programmes they made were very informative but I learned later when they were no longer making them that they didn't actually get on. They hadn't been friends before making the programme and had been thrown together for the purpose of producing that kind of show.

Maybe I picked up on the fakeness of it I don't know but I couldn't watch it although I do think people would have learned a lot from it.

I used to love that programme in a 'thank-goodness-even-I'm-not-quite-that-bad' kind of way!  It's interesting to know that they didn't really get on as I always sort of got that impression too but wasn't sure.

It did definitely give some handy hints though and I got their 'Cleaning Bible' a few years ago which is full those hints & tips (I don't know if this is the same book you found Jill?).

One tip in particular which stuck with me, probably because I used it the day after watching the programme, was to use a little bit of lemon in water to help clean the microwave.  'Cook' it on high for a couple of minutes and it loosens the grease & grime enough to be wiped off with a cloth or piece of kitchen roll.

Hi Owly,

I tend not to watch TV as you know so never saw that programme. I do watch the "Extreme Hoarders' show when I am visiting with son & DIL as she always puts the subtitles up for me.( OH finds subtitles distracting so I don't use them at home). I am always horrified at the state of those homes but I also feel extreme sympathy for the people affected by it as they are so deep in the mess, clutter and dirt that they just don't even know where to start to improve things , plus they have all the emotional issues to deal with.

I expect TV is like everything else in life, people may have to work together but it doesn't make them automatic friends.

Hi Melanie,

I think that was the book. I only flicked through it but thought the tips were excellent. I think if the book is still there, I might actually get it.

I use that lemon tip in my microwave too. Always keeps it seeming pleasant as well.

I thought it was a good show and the book is full of good tips - very old school in lots of ways. It was set up as a lighthearted entertainment show - not something like Hoarders involving people with serious mental health issues or anything like that (although I think a few of the participants probably suffered from depression).

As well as the tips and the full house clean the people were left with a simple, basic routine to keep on top of the day to day things which I liked as it left people with a way forward without being too overwhelming. It was obvious Kim and Aggie didn't get on but there you go, I certainly haven't been best buddies with everyone I've ever worked with!

Hi Sam,

unfortunately the book had gone when I went back. Murphy's law, I should have got it when I saw it.  Sounds like those tewo ladies managed to sort out a few people and made their homes more pleasant to live in :-)

I think some of the people featured will maybe be back in a similar state now and others will have maintained to a greater or lesser extent. It would be interesting to know, but I think there would be few surprises. I'd keep an eye out for the book when you're in the charity shop. I've seen it many many times, it's one of those that always seems to do the rounds!
