Does anyone have any experience with HSP in toddlers?

My DS (2y11m) was diagnosed with this on Thursday, having been unwell since last Sunday evening.

He's had abdominal pain, headache, vomiting, swelling of ankles, knees, elbows, hands, sides of his face, ears, testicles and penis, purpuric rash on most of his bottom half with a couple of spots on his arms and face, some protein and blood in his urine. We've been to and fro the hospital who are monitoring him, but we can't offer him anything more than paracetamol and ibuprofen.

He seems to perk up for a couple of hours then gets worse again. Night time seems worse for pain and DH and I are up every half hour with him, so we're now all rather sleep deprived as this has been going on over a week now.

Just wondered if anyone else had any experience with it and how long it lasted?

I do hope he isn't suffering for a full four weeks like this :smileysad: Wish I could make him all better!

Poor DS and poor you and your DH it doesn't sound very nice for any of you :smileysad:
I have no personal experience but do understand that steriods help shorten the duration and reduce the abdo pain - not sure if you have already discussed this and decided not to for what ever reason
Hope your DS gets better soon

Hi Jo,

Thanks for your reply.

He was given steroids this time last week for 5 days, and they've helped quite a lot. He had another check-up today with the paediatrician who is happy with his progress.

We're at the point now where the joints in his legs swell and hurt by about midday, and he's getting really tired very easily, but that's normal for this stage.

Have one more weekly check, then fortnightly and eventually reducing in frequency over a few weeks, but still under the care of the hospital for some time to come it seems!

He's doing MUCH better now, thank you! No check this week, one next week just to check urine and blood pressure!
He's almost back to normal now, though, which is brilliant!
Thanks for asking :smileyhappy: xx

He had another of his fortnightly checks today and all was fine.

Now I just have to test his urine weekly and the community nurses will come round to do his blood pressure every couple of weeks and answer any questions/record any flare-ups etc.

Have also got the appointment through for March when he'll see the paediatrician at the hospital for his 6 month follow-up, when hopefully he'll be discharged.
