Brown scaly patches on scalp?

Hi Everyone,

When he was very little Oscar had small patches of pale brown scaly stuff on his scalp, and although he has much more hair now so they aren't obvious, they are still there, and seem to cover a larger area now. We've never treated them with anything, and have only used shampoo a few times, and have just washed his hair with water since it rarely gets properly dirty, and I prefer not to use unnecessary products on him. These patches can be picked off quite easily, (a bit embarrassing to admit, but it's soo satisfying!!) but I'm starting to wonder whether I should really be doing something about them. Has anyone else had anything like this on their LO? Could it be cradlecap?

Thanks for any advice,

Laura, Oscar & Bump (29+2)

Hi Laura,

I've had a search using Google and come up with the below, which it does sound like. It does mention that it can be caused by infrequent shampoos, so perhaps using shampoo more frequently would help rather than hinder?

If in doubt though, it's always best to visit your GP.

hi

as you know holly had bad eczema so i avoid nasties at all costs. i now use halos n horns shampoo and bubble bath - its fabulous and doesn't contain any irritants or evil stuff lol. i get mine in tesco - its generally hidden with the nappies etc and not in the shampoo ailse, as i didscovered last week!

Hi Jenny,

Thank you very much for that link. The description does sound similar to what Oscar has, so maybe I should get the doctor to take a look at him. I feel bad now that we haven't used shampoo very much, but his hair is always so clean, soft and shiny without, that it hasn't really seemed necessary except on occasions when he's had suncream or food in it!

Hi Betty,

Thank you for that link. Those products do sound good.... I have to admit wincing inside when DH came home bearing Johnsons baby wash as I'm sure I have read bad things about Johnsons products not being that gentle on young skin. I had thought about looking for a Neals Yard organic product, but I'll see if our local Tesco does the Halos n Horns range as they sound nice and nasty-free.

By the way is Holly's eczema getting any better?

hi

johnsons is quite evil really, full of parabens, sls etc etc. may well be fine on "normal" skin but can play havock with dodgy skin. i've heard the neals yard stuff is lovely but haven't used it myself.

hollys eczema is practically gone. she has little flair ups but really its nothing compared to how it was. she had a couple of little patchs now but she was eating biscuits with milk in last week and she's had some soya yoghurts too. good news though about the soya because even though she had a full pot of soya yoghurt 2 days running there is hardly any sign of eczema. so woo hoo fab news. loads more food options now that she can cope with soya in small quantities!
