How do I help strengthen my baby's legs?

Hi there ladies

Hope you and your wonderful babies are doing well.

So our babies are around 9 months old and every thing I read fir this age suggests that they should have started cruising and discusses walking. Izzy can't stand with my support as she doesn't seem to have the strength in her legs. I literally have to hold her up so she can just touch the floor with her cute little toes, but she cannot apply weight on her feet.

Thus my question is, how do I help her strengthen her gorgeous little legs?

Hi. Have no advice except I think 9 months is very early to be doing this! Elsie is nowhere near cruising, she's just got the hang of commando crawling! It'll happen eventually

Thanks for our replies ladies. It's comforting to know other babies are at the same sort of developmental level as my little princess

Olivia is cruising around but before that when she had just started crawling her legs still seemed so weak when I tried to stand her the one day all of a sudden she could stand, so I wouldn't worry too much x

have you ever used a door bouncer or baby walker, or jumperoo, I should think they would help to strengthen her legs. but I really wouldnt worry about that at all hun, still very early

Ethan has enjoyed his jumperoo from a very young age, so his legs are fairly strong, but it has only been recently that he's started putting weight on his legs, he loves standing up, but he can't pull himself up to standing, only to kneeling.

I think you'll find it'll be one of those things that'll happen quickly once she starts to do it, she's still very young, my DD was cruising at this age, but I think she was pretty early doing that. I'm dreading Ethan crusing, he gets into enough mischief crawling xx

I thought it was quite common for babies to still be struggling to weight bear propery at this age! It's definitely seems that way reading the comments from the other ladies too :smileyhappy:

Oscar is cruising but only just - he suddenly learnt to crawl, pull himself up, cruise and is now starting to let go of furniture and stand alone all in about 2 weeks. My friend's daughter however was the exact opposite, had no interest in putting her feet on the ground and would lift her legs up if ever anyone tried to get her to stand. And yet now she is trying to climb up the stairs after her sister and she turns 1 this month. And I've known babies who didn't do that until well after 1 and yet when they did decide to try it they took to it really quickly.

It's another one of those things that all babies do differently! But if you do want to give her a helping hand, bouncers may be worth a try? Oscar adored his and even now I'm sure he *could* stand up for longer it's just he gets so excited he tries to bounce and topples over lol

I too would have said that it doesn't sound uncommon. They will soon develop the muscles etc as soon as they're ready to!

Door bouncers are great for it though (and an absolute godsend if your child is like ours were and will happily spend 1/2 hour or so in it at a time - several times a day!), and it will mean that you can sweep the floor or cook dinner or whatever with them safe and closeby and able to watch you! Sam always used to have the door bouncer in the sitting room doorway, and Katie always had it in the kitchen doorway, because life worked differently when Katie was a baby!

I remember that both of mine learned to stand more or less as they learned to crawl - once they'd got crawling forwards (at about 9 - 10 months) they then pulled themselves up very quickly afterwards - but cruising came some weeks after that. They all go at their own speed. I know with Katie we knew that she could walk for about 3 months before she'd actually try it on her own as she didn't have the confidence - she was 14 months before she took her first steps - but there were about 14 or so of them as her 'first steps' and she didn't stop afterwards! What I'm saying is that they take their time - some do things exactly when the books say they will, some can do it but don't realise it, some will determinedly push themselves continually.... and some are just plain inventive. Katie didn't need to walk so she didn't. Why didn't she need to - a big brother to bring her most things and if she wanted to take something with her when crawling she'd carry it in her mouth like a dog!!

They're all different...

H.
