Deferring school for a year?

6 Posts

I was wondering if anyone had seen the news saying summer babies did less well at school due to them being a year younger than the other classmates?

Has anyone considered deferring their LO's school until the year after?

Any ideas or comments?

Love and hugs

Hi

Yeah i'd heard that was an option but then having looked into it i decided against deferring because in our area (don't know about elsewhere) if u defer then the child will start the following year straight into year 1 & i think that missing year R & everything from that year would be a bigger disadvantage that maybe not achieving all the academic targets which i think they would catch up on. As a child i moved schools every few years (army child) & the whole settling into existing groups & making new friends on a whole set me back more than the academic expectations its so hard being accepted into a new group & we all know how unwilling kids can be at accepting new people, alright at their age its not gonna be that problematic but i think school is such a hugh transition to do it without these added pressures is what we're gonna be doing.

Hello,

I'd not really looked that deep into it and didn't know that they'd just go into year 1. Seems a little pointless the. Doesn't it?

You've given me a lot to think about!

As an August baby myself, I wouldn't worry. I mean, I did OK, got a PhD and everything.

It's more to do with their inate intelligence the support they get at home I think.

Of couse, my spelling might have been better if I was older.....

Yes you're probably right. My brother is a June baby and he struggled, but he is dyslexic and refused any assistance due to embarrassment. He's now doing a degree in astro physics.

As for the spelling, I'm a January baby and I can't spell either so you must have to e really near September to be blessed with that!

Agree with Abi, it's more about the support thet get at home and innate intelligence. However, there are a few other barriers to preventing them from doing as well as their older classmates. Some August babies may not be as physically developed/co-ordinated, this can affect fine motor skils such as pencil hold/grip. Depending on personality/ how teacher supports them they can find this v frustrating and think they can't write. Yes they'll catch up but at school they may seem behind for a while. Also emotional maturity affects how kids learn. I've friends who have 4year olds who will be in the same year as our august babies and they are streets ahead in terms of emotional maturity. And this affects how they settle into the school environment, how they make friends and concentration levels. Again, this isn't true for every child but as an ex-receotion teacher I recall that there is a huge gap between Sept and Oct born kids. Compared to our LOs ;(

I wish they still did 2 intakes.

On the positive side Caitlin can't wait! She's no idea what happens there but as we pass school everyday and she sees all the kids playing she just want a piece of the action! X

Thanks for all the advice, alexis will be starting school in September.

We have chosen her school brut are not sure whether we will be here for much longer as the house is on the market. Hopefully it will before September so there is little disruption.
