Donating bone marrow/cord blood
Hi Ladies,
As many of you already know there is a very poorly little girl Cara on my March10 Mum's Club. She was diagnosed with a rare immune disorder at only a few months old meaning that she needed a bone marrow transplant. A match was found and the transplant was done, but unfortunately weeks later she developed Graft Versus Host Disease which is when the transplanted material starts to attack the body. It firstly affected her delicate skin, but once that was under control it then went on to affect her lungs. She's in a bad way now, sedated and on a ventilator which they are slowly weaning her down from to hopefully avoid any lung damage, and she's also been having Chemo. The only way that the Dr's have said they can save her is to remove the donor marrow and put her old marrow back in, which is happening today but they won't know if it's working for another 2wks. It does put her back to square one though, still poorly and in desperate need of another donor
Her poor parents have been told twice now that they would lose her, but she's fought and fought and so far amazed everyone by proving the Dr's wrong. She's such a strong little girl, but she can't fight this battle on her own.
There are so many all over the world like Cara who need life saving bone marrow transplants and any one of us, our friends or family could be the match that they've been so desperately waiting for. If you would like to help someone like Cara then this website gives more information on whether or not you can donate and how to get on to the bone marrow donor registry http://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/bonemarrow/
If you're pregnant or know anyone who is then another way to help is to donate cord blood, which you can find more information on here http://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/cordblood/
Many thanks in advance.
