Ayas Birth Story

Im finally going to get around to doing this before I forget all the details!!

Here goes . . .

So we had an appointment at the hospital on the 23rd Feb, for a sweep, which didn't work! So I was booked to be induced the next day, at 8.30am. I was given my first pessary around 10am, after all my checks etc, I had high blood pressure and lots of swelling, so they took some blood to check all was well, which it was, thankfully. So we waited, waited, waited six hours, and nothing was happening!

I was given my second pessary (which really was sore!) at 4pm. We then got moved from the day assesment unit, to a ward, during which time I started feeling really uncomfortable. I felt like I had constant tightening pain low down, and all over my tummy. The pain didn't stop for a second, it was just constant. They strapped me to the monitor to check how baby was, and her heartbeat was a bit all over the place, so a doctor came to see me. He looked at the print outs from the monitor for some time and he left, and came back, and asked a few questions, examined me, then told us what was happening. Due to the induction, labour was starting too quickly, I was contracting too much, but not dilating, so I was contracting constantly from the word go! I didnt have a break between my contractions, so my baby was getting upset :smileysad: I was at 1cm at this point. I started throwing up at this point!

So the doctor had to inject me in my stomach :smileysad: He said it was quite rare for this to happen, but it was due to the induction. (I was sick again here!) So he gave me the injection to slow everything down. That brought my contractions down to one every four minutes. The doctor examined me after he gave me the injection, and told me I was 4-5cm! So a lady came with my wheelchair and took us up to the delivery suite!

At 11pm, I cried as they wheeled me in the darkened room! It dawned on me, that THIS, is THE room, that Ill push my baby out in! Im not leaving here until I have done this! It had just happened SO quickly up to now, and I had been kind of left to it, I didnt really know what was going on and that made the pain harder to cope with, because I wasn't sure that everything was happening as it should. I was sick again...! The doctor came to my room as we arrived and mentioned having to break my waters, I literally got on to the bed, got strapped to the monitor, got introduced to my midwife, she left the room and my waters broke at 11.19pm! I was really relieved that I didnt have to have more people poking about in me! The midwife came back a very happy lady!

She checked it was my waters, which it was, and then left us to our own devices again. A little while later I sent DP to go tell someone I NEED some drugs! I was in a lot of pain, they gave me some gas and air. I was sick more...Then after a little while longer I told my midwife I needed some more drugs, she offered pethadine, which I didnt want. So she said I can have an epidural (which I wanted) but there was 4 women waiting for one! So I was put on the 'waiting' list! I was sick about 3 more times waiting for the anesthetist, he eventually came about 2.30am. (I still hadnt been examined since I was on the ward, at 4-5cms) He explained the side effects to me (which I didnt hear a word of) and I signed the papers! I didnt care, give me drugs!

So he gave me the epidural just after half two, which was WONDERFUL . . . for half an hour. So I asked for more. I was given more about 3am, which didn't touch the pain, it was just getting worse. It was now so low down, and none of the pain was in my stomach, just really, really low down. I was writhing around in pain, STILL bloody strapped to the monitor. The doctor (the one who injected my tummy earlier on) came to see me and I told him it didnt feel like I'd had the epidural anymore, and why was it not working! I was contracting really often and Very painfully! He was looking very concerned at the readings from the monitor, in the meantime I was given MORE epidural drug thingy!

The doctor told me, that she was getting distressed, and they were not sure about her oxygen levels, so they were going to give me a little while longer, then if her readings didn't stabilise, they were going to have to take a few drops of blood from her head, and check her oxygen level that way. They told me they were going to have to consider an emergency section :smileysad: So they came back, with stirrups! And lots of instruments! And a massive flood light to look up my bits! DP saw it all, they put this massive long needle kind of hook thing inside me, and it came out with a few drops of blood on it, they took the blood to be tested.

When he was still down there, he said to us, 'Okay, I have two good bits of news.' We were like yeah??! He said 'Your 9cm, and baby has a full head of hair!' We were like WOW!! THATS WHY MY EPIDURAL HADN'T WORKED! They hadn't examined me for HOURS, so when they gave me my epidural, I was too dilated for it to work, so it didnt touch the pain.

They rushed around getting bits and bobs, adjusting my stirrups, sitting me up, and before I knew it I felt the strangest feeling, it felt like my body was tensing up ready to expel her! I cant describe it in any other way, other than my body was evicting her! So my midwife said to me, when your contraction comes and you feel the urge to push, I want you to push into your bottom as hard as you can.

So I had the massive urge to push, I was told to grab under my thighs with both hands and push. After one push, I was SO tired, I heard the midwife say to the doctor 'I think she might need an episiotomy' at which point I thought 'HELL NO' I dont think so, no more bloody intefering with me Im doing this by myself! So, after 8 minutes of pushing, my perfect little girl was delivered on 25th Feb at 04:37am  :smileyvery-happy:

I had a small vaginal wall tear, no stitches. She cried for a second, then just stared at us with big, wide open eyes. The biggest, most beautiful blue eyes Ive ever seen. Bright pink lips, she latched on straightaway.

Phew. Wow, I cant believed I relived that again!
