Hi everyone,

Welcome to the brand spanking new iVillage.co.uk Book Club, as you can probably tell I'm very excited to be here and can't wait to hear your thoughts on A Death In Summer by Benjamin Black - or is it John Banville? :smileyhappy:

I'm the CL (Community Leader) for this book so I'll be checking in to see what you think of A Death In Summer and hopefully joining some interesting chats about this hot and sticky murder mystery. I'm the only person I know who is reading the book so I'll be throwing you a few questions in the next week for starters, but I'd also really like you to lead some conversations and maybe take everyone in a new direction. We all have individual relationships with the books we read and I'm sure we'll have had some different ideas around the whodunnit element here!

If you're new to the iVillage.co.uk community then a big welcome to you and old-hands at this whole message board malarkey - thanks for getting involved in this new adventure!

Don't forget there will be a second round of books coming up later this month so if you're enjoying this meeting of minds there is plenty more to come.

This book looks as if it will be a good read so looking forward to it. But.....I really must finish the one I am already reading first. Just cannot cope with having two on the go at once.!

I've been at a local music festival for three days and took this with me to read between music sets...and it didn't disappoint!

I'm an 'impatient' reader and it's unusual for me not to turn to the last chapter to find out 'whodunnit' but with this one the pace was fast enough for me not to resort to my usual tactic. :-)

So I've had a really enjoyable read - enough foreshadowing to use as clues, a few red herrings, believable and rounded characters and plenty of plot!

I know what you mean Pat! There simply isn't enough room in my head for two stories!

How far along are people in their books? Innerearthmother, I take it you've already finished yours?

Hi guys! Just a heads-up that I'll be off on my hols next week so probably won't be able to get on the boards and see what you're saying. I hope everyone is enjoying the book and I'm looking forward to the discussions kicking off! Take care...

Have just finished reading the book but cannot say I really enjoyed it. Too many characters for me I'm afraid and my "old" brain does not function as well as it used to! However on a more positive note I felt that it was very well written and very descriptive of the people and places. So much so that at times I felt I was actually there!

Hey,

Just started reading this on the tube this morning. Seems like a good read so far but I can see what you mean about loads of characters, it's kind of a whodunnit and they can get confusing. A bit like The Suspicions of Mr Whicher and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in that there will be a load of possible suspects....intriguing start anyway. I will let you know how I get on....

I am halfway through this book and have to say I am not really enjoying it. It is too much about characters and less of a whodunnit I feel. Saying that, it is well written and brings the characters and area to life. I have to say I don't actually really like any of the characters so far.

I am ashamed to say I only got half way through this and it went to the charity shop. I thought the characters were very bland. To me it should have been called "Boredom in Summer".
